Creative Critical Reflection Question 1

How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

The idea that my partner and I had for the film is a basic one: a story about an abusive relationship. However, in movies about this, the man in the relationship is normally the abuser. For our movie we wanted to represent the men who are abused by women and many times are told to “man up” because they should be able to stand up against a woman. We wanted to challenge conventions this way.

We did not want the man in the film opening to be this big “macho” guy for that exact reason, we wanted to portray the sensitive men who get silenced because they “aren’t tough enough”.

Another thing we wanted to change is the fact that the women that do abuse men aren’t exactly stereotyped, but one could think of them as burly, masculine and loud. However, in this short film opening, we placed the girl as the perfect “girl next door type”. She wore very bright colors, had her hair done and seemed to be in the perfect relationship. She seems nice to all, which is why it was such a shock to her friend that she would do such a thing.
